Project Overview
This project aimed to improve the UX of a mentorship platform for professionals in the UX industry. At the startup’s development stage, I conducted UX research and usability testing based on design drafts created before my involvement, identifying key friction points. Building on these insights, I designed the mentor dashboard and proposed design improvements for individual pages. In addition, I suggested potential applications of AI within the platform.

Understanding the Brief
Objective
The objective is to test and refine the mentor flow of the MVP, focusing on onboarding mentees with a 3-month action plan and designing a clear, usable mentor dashboard. Through research and usability testing, the goal is to identify friction points, propose design improvements, and explore AI-powered features for future scalability.
Test mentor flows of MVP
1
Mentor sets availability and hourly rate in his profile
2
Mentor reads mentee goals and accepts a mentee request for a free initial call.
3
Mentor meet with the mentee and build an action plan
4
Mentor send the plan and the payment to the mentee

Research & Ideation
Based on the design draft created before my involvement, I developed a user journey map and user flows to deepen understanding and identify friction points. I also tested competitor mentoring platforms to gather firsthand insights. Using these findings, we created a new low-fidelity design.

Discovery call
Research

Originally, the action plan was designed to be created together with the mentee during the discovery call. While the discovery call itself was part of the plan’s design, the flow leading up to the call had not been clearly defined, and mentors didn’t have a way to review the mentee’s requests or details in advance when preparing the plan. In addition, when a new plan needed to be created from scratch, the time within the discovery call alone might not have been enough both for the mentor to design the plan thoughtfully and for the mentee to decide whether they wanted to continue working with that mentor.

Ideation

We suggested designing it like WhatsApp, where calls and messages can be handled in the same place. By allowing meetings to be initiated directly from the chat and using a small meeting window like Zoom or Google Meet, mentors could view the mentee’s pre-submitted requests while creating the action plan (Overview section), making it easier to tailor the plan according to those requests and providing a clearer flow leading up to the discovery call.

Booking request
Research

Based on my experience using a competitor platform like ADP List, previously, mentees could only select one available date from a mentor’s profile to send a request. However, if the mentor had a scheduling conflict, the mentee would need to send another request, which made the experience feel cumbersome from the mentee’s perspective

User Research
Based on the low-fidelity design we created, we conducted user research with mentors. As a result, we received their feedback and made the following revisions.
Friction points found after user research
01
The chat page is overloaded with too many functions, complicating the user experience
02
There is no dedicated page where mentors can easily review their schedule.
03
When mentees send request dates, mentors cannot check their own schedules within the same screen, making the flow inconvenient.
04
There’s little need for mentees to select multiple date options, which can actually make the process feel more complicated.

Solution
From our initial research and ideation, putting too many features into the chat page made the UX flow feel messy and confusing. So, we split the features across different pages and gave each one a clear purpose.

The booking request from the mentee was redesigned so that they can select only one date and time. If the schedules don’t match, the mentee can submit a new booking request by choosing from the mentor’s available times.
